Pair of handmade Annan-style rice bowls with bird design - Kyoto Japanese pottery

Cherish the Everyday

Enjoy meals with your favorite bowl.

These bowls are crafted by Miyuki Matoba of nagusa, a studio in Yamashina, Kyoto. She named her studio “nagusa,” meaning “nameless grass,” to express her wish to create pottery that blends gently into everyday life.

This philosophy comes to life in these endearing and heartwarming bowls.

Handcrafted Annan Bird rice bowl by Miyuki Matoba - Kyoto Kiyomizu ware Japanese pottery

The Annan style originates from Vietnam and is known for its expressive glazes and natural variations in color. Each bowl offers unique charm through its soft bleeding effects and subtle shifts in tone, a true appeal of handmade Japanese ceramics.

The technique involves carving lines and then decorating with gosu (blue pigment), resulting in a gentle, inviting finish.

Handmade Annan-style rice bowl with bird motif - Kyoto pottery nagusa

After studying fine arts at university, Matoba trained in ceramics in Kyoto. Her simple bird illustrations, drawn with graceful lines, bring a touch of warmth to the dining table or tea time.
