Handmade Kyoto pottery cup with animal design by Takanobu Sawada

Realistic, yet endearingly charming—
Enjoy a relaxing moment with your favorite cup.

In the peaceful countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, Japanese ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates expressive animal-themed pottery surrounded by nature.

Each piece is hand-shaped with care and trimmed for a comfortable fit in the hand. The soft milky-white base, created with a traditional kohiki glaze, brings out the gentle character of handmade Japanese ceramics.

Kyoto kohiki ceramic carving detail

Warmth you can feel in every detail

The animal illustrations are not painted but delicately carved into the kohiki glaze surface. Each line has a sense of movement, giving the work its own unique warmth and artistry.

Born into a family of Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware potters, Sawada has been familiar with clay since childhood. Now in his 30s, he already holds over 20 years of pottery experience—mastering his craft with precision and personality.
