Realistic, yet undeniably charming—
Take a moment to relax with your favorite cup.
From his studio nestled in the forested mountains of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates endearing works of art inspired by nature.
Each piece features animals that are both realistic and full of warmth—reflections of the peaceful scenery that surrounds his workshop.
Carefully hand-thrown and trimmed with ease of use in mind, these tumblers offer a form that fits comfortably in the hand.
The soft, milky-white surface is achieved using the traditional kohiki technique, enhancing the natural texture unique to handmade Japanese pottery.
Feel the Warmth of Handmade Craft
The animal illustrations are not painted—they are hand-carved by scraping away the surface of the kohiki glaze, creating expressive and lively lines.
Each line tells a story, bringing a unique character and warmth to every piece.
Born into a family of Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware potters, Sawada has been immersed in ceramics since childhood. Now with over 20 years of experience, he is considered a seasoned artisan in his thirties.
Blending traditional techniques with a fresh artistic perspective, he produces original ceramic pieces that reflect the essence of Kyoto’s craftsmanship.
Bring the charm of Kyoto’s handmade ceramics into your everyday life—and experience the joy of using a truly one-of-a-kind piece.
