Handmade Kyoto ceramic tumbler with carved animal design

Realistic yet endearing—
Take a quiet moment with your favorite cup.

In the peaceful countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, Japanese ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates handmade pottery inspired by the natural world around him.

His works feature animals rendered with realistic charm and warmth, carved into each piece by hand. Every form is thoughtfully shaped and trimmed for a comfortable, easy-to-use feel.

The soft, milky white kohiki glaze enhances the natural, organic texture of the ceramic, bringing out the gentle beauty of traditional Japanese pottery.

Craftsmanship you can feel

Instead of being painted, the animal designs are etched into the kohiki glaze, creating a tactile and expressive surface.

Each line has motion and character, giving the piece both artistry and a sense of warmth. This unique method highlights the beauty of handmade tradition.

Raised in a family of Kyoto potters specializing in Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware, Sawada began working with clay from a young age. Now in his 30s, he already boasts more than 20 years of experience.
