Realistic yet endearing—
Take a quiet moment with your favorite cup.
In the peaceful countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates unique handmade pottery inspired by the local wildlife and scenery.
His work blends realistic depictions of animals with a warm, inviting charm that captures the viewer's heart.
Each piece is thoughtfully hand-formed and carefully trimmed to fit naturally in your hand, reflecting the practical beauty of Japanese craftsmanship.
The soft, milky-white kohiki glaze enhances the natural warmth of traditional pottery, giving it a gentle, soothing character.
Crafted with warmth and care
Instead of using a brush, Sawada carves each animal illustration directly into the kohiki surface. This technique adds texture and life to every line.
His expressive carving brings a sense of motion and emotion, resulting in a ceramic piece that feels both artistic and personal.
Born to a family of Kyoto potters specializing in Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware, Sawada has been working with clay since childhood—and already has over 20 years of experience despite being in his 30s.
His refined technique and fresh perspective allow him to create pottery that is deeply rooted in tradition while offering something delightfully original.
Combining youthful sensibility with seasoned skill, Sawada crafts one-of-a-kind pieces that embody the spirit of Kyoto and the heart of traditional Japanese ceramic art.
Bring a piece of his world into your home and let it quietly enrich your everyday moments.
