Realistic, yet charmingly whimsical—
Relax with your favorite handmade cup.
In the peaceful countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates pottery inspired by the rich natural surroundings and the animals that inhabit them.
His pieces capture a delicate balance between realism and warmth, giving each work a comforting personality.
Every cup is individually hand-shaped and carefully trimmed to offer a natural fit in the hand.
The soft, milky kohiki glaze enhances the gentle texture unique to traditional Japanese pottery.
Crafted with warmth and care
The animal illustrations are not painted, but etched by hand into the kohiki clay surface—an expressive technique that gives the lines a sense of movement and vitality.
This unique method results in a piece that feels both personal and artistic.
Sawada, the son of a Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware potter, has been immersed in the world of traditional Kyoto ceramics since childhood, with over 20 years of experience already under his belt.
Now in his 30s, he is recognized for his refined skill and creative vision.
Combining youthful sensibility with technical mastery, Sawada continues to produce original works rooted in the traditional spirit of Kyoto.
Bring a piece of handmade Japanese ceramic artistry into your daily life and experience its quiet charm.
