Handmade ceramic cup with animal design by Takanobu Sawada

Realistic, yet irresistibly charming—
Take a relaxing break with your favorite cup.

In the wooded countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada crafts pottery that features lifelike yet heartwarming animal motifs.

Each piece is carefully shaped by hand, with a form refined for ease of use and a comfortable grip.

The soft, milky-white kohiki glaze enhances the gentle, earthy texture that is unique to ceramic ware.

Hand-carved animal detail on kohiki pottery

Handmade warmth you can feel

The animal illustrations are not drawn with a brush, but etched by hand into the kohiki surface using a carving technique.

Each line is full of movement, giving the pieces a unique personality and inviting warmth.

As the son of a Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware potter, Sawada has been immersed in the world of ceramics since childhood and now brings over 20 years of experience to his craft.

Despite being in his 30s, he is already regarded as a seasoned artisan with exceptional skill.

Small ceramic cup with warm animal motif

With a refined technique and youthful sensibility, Sawada creates original works that are distinctly Kyoto in spirit.

We invite you to bring a touch of his artistry into your everyday life.
