Artist Biography
Issei Kato (Art name: Jyosui)
Born in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, in the 1930s
Graduated from Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Technical Training Institute in the 1950s
Studied under Fukuda Shosai (Rikisaburo) to master overglaze painting techniques
Founded Jyosui Togakaen Studio in Imakumano, Higashiyama, Kyoto, in 1961
Dedicated to creating Iroe Kyoto pottery, he has exhibited in numerous Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware exhibitions.
In the 1990s, he received the Governor of Kyoto Award and the Mayor of Kyoto Award.
In 2020, he was honored as a Contemporary Master Craftsman by Japan’s Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare.
He currently heads Jyosui Togakaen, carrying forward Kyoto’s artistic legacy with delicate and expressive overglaze work.
