Relentless Pursuit of Glaze Perfection

Yoshinori Izumi, who has his studio in the satoyama (foothills) of Keihoku, Kyoto, has been researching glazes for over 50 years.

Building on the knowledge gained at the Kyoto City Industrial Research Institute, he has meticulously verified changes due to firing temperature, glaze composition, and flame exposure, pursuing his unique kōhen (kiln-transmutation) expressions.

Izumi's work is not merely dependent on chance but is built upon a wealth of accumulated data and experience over many years.

Nevertheless, unpredictable changes still occur within the kiln, ensuring that no two pieces ever have the same appearance.

Beautiful Colors Created by Fire

Izumi's Tenmoku and Seiji (celadon) works display complex color variations that emerge through firing.

The deep gradations created by the flowing glaze and the delicate kōhen resulting from mineral reactions exhibit a natural, organic appearance.

Utensils that Blend into Daily Life

While possessing a high artistic quality, Izumi's vessels are crafted with the intention of being used in daily life.

Based on his long experience in creating a wide range of vessels, including sake cups, teacups, and matcha bowls, he pays meticulous attention to details such as the feel on the lips, ease of holding, and overall usability.

These vessels have a quiet presence and enhance the food and drink they hold. They allow you to enjoy the changing expressions of the glaze and the play of light with every use.

Comment from the Owner

These are kumidashi bowls from the "Ryusei" series, featuring beautiful blue and silver iridescence that appears during firing.

Their expression changes depending on the light and viewing angle, allowing you to enjoy the flowing patterns of the glaze.

The unique kōhen patterns of each piece are also captivating, quietly adding color to your tea time.
