Endless Pursuit of Glaze Perfection

Yoshinori Izumi, who runs his studio in the satoyama (foothills) of Keihoku, Kyoto, has been researching glazes for over 50 years.

Building on the knowledge he gained at the Kyoto City Institute of Industrial Technology, he has meticulously examined changes caused by firing temperature, glaze composition, and flame exposure, pursuing his unique expressions of kiln-fired effects.

Izumi's works are not simply left to chance; they are built upon years of accumulated data and experience.

Yet, even so, unpredictable changes occur in the kiln, ensuring no two pieces are ever exactly alike.

 

Beautiful Colors Created by Fire

Izumi's Tenmoku and celadon works exhibit complex color changes created during firing.

The deep gradations formed by flowing glazes and the delicate kiln variations resulting from mineral reactions display an appearance akin to natural phenomena.

Vessels for Everyday Life

While possessing high artistic merit, Izumi's vessels are created with an emphasis on daily use.

With years of experience crafting a wide range of vessels including sake cups, teacups, and matcha bowls, meticulous attention is paid to the feel on the lips, ease of holding, and overall comfort in use.

They possess a quiet presence that enhances food and drink. These vessels allow you to enjoy the changing expressions of the glaze and light with every use.

This is a Kumi-dashi bowl from the "Ryusei" (Meteor) series, featuring beautiful blue and silver iridescence that appears during firing.

Its appearance changes depending on the light and viewing angle, allowing you to enjoy the flowing glaze patterns.

The unique kiln variations of each piece are also charming, making it a work that quietly enhances your tea time.
