Realistic yet full of charm—
Relax with your favorite handmade mug.
In the serene mountain countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, Japanese ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates pottery surrounded by nature.
His works feature lifelike yet warmly expressive animals, captured in original forms that bring a gentle touch to everyday life.
Each mug is shaped and trimmed by hand with care, designed to be comfortable to hold and easy to use. The soft, milky white surface—created using the traditional kohiki technique—brings out the unique warmth of handmade ceramic.
Experience the warmth of traditional craftsmanship
The animal illustrations are not painted—they’re carved directly into the kohiki surface, line by line, adding depth and personality to each piece.
The result is a unique fusion of expression and form that feels genuinely heartfelt and refined.
Sawada, whose father is also a ceramic artist in Kyoto’s Kyo and Kiyomizu ware traditions, has been immersed in pottery since childhood. Now in his thirties with over 20 years of experience, he is already a respected figure in the world of traditional Japanese ceramics.
Combining youthful creativity with expert technique, Sawada continues to craft original, handmade pottery that reflects the beauty and spirit of Kyoto. His pieces are both functional and artistic—perfect for adding a special touch to your daily routine.
Discover the joy of using traditional Japanese ceramics in your everyday life.
