Animal-themed pottery by Takanobu Sawada

Realistic, yet endearing.
Enjoy a quiet moment with your favorite cup.

In the rural mountains of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada crafts his work surrounded by nature.

His ceramics feature animals rendered with a balance of realism and warmth—pieces that feel both expressive and comforting.

Each item is carefully hand-shaped and trimmed for ease of use, designed to sit naturally in your hand.

The soft milky-white *kohiki* clay body brings out the gentle texture unique to handcrafted pottery.

Feel the warmth of handmade craftsmanship

Rather than being painted, the animal designs are created by carefully carving into the *kohiki* surface.

Each line conveys movement and character, giving the piece a sense of life and emotional warmth.

The son of a Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware potter, Sawada grew up immersed in pottery and has been creating his own work for over 20 years.

Now in his 30s, he’s already a seasoned artist with refined technique and creative maturity.

Combining youthful sensitivity with masterful skill, Sawada creates pieces full of originality—true to the spirit of Kyoto craftsmanship.

We hope you’ll enjoy the charm of his creations as part of your everyday moments.
