Handmade Kyoto pottery cup with animal carving

Realistic, yet full of charm.
Take a moment of peace with your favorite cup.

In the peaceful countryside of Nantan City, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates traditional Japanese pottery with warm, lifelike animal motifs.

Surrounded by nature, Sawada shapes each piece by hand, carefully refining the form to feel natural and easy to use in your hands.

The soft milky white *kohiki* glaze brings out the gentle, earthy texture that only handmade ceramics can offer.

Pottery That Radiates the Warmth of Craftsmanship

Instead of being painted, the animal designs are carved into the surface of the *kohiki* glaze, giving each piece its own unique texture and depth.

The expressive lines give life to every animal, creating pieces that feel both personal and heartwarming.

Sawada grew up in a family of Kyoto ceramic artists—his father a respected Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware potter. He began working with clay at an early age and now has over 20 years of experience.

In his 30s, he’s already recognized as a seasoned artist, blending traditional Japanese techniques with his own creative sensibility.

Takanobu Sawada's handmade animal pottery

With a refined skill set and fresh perspective, Sawada continues to craft handmade pottery that reflects the unique spirit of Kyoto. Bring the charm of Japanese tradition into your daily life with his one-of-a-kind creations.
