Handmade ceramic cup from Kyoto featuring carved animals

Realistic, yet full of warmth.
Take a peaceful moment with your favorite cup.

Deep in the countryside of Nantan City, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada crafts handmade pottery that brings animals to life in a style that’s both realistic and heartwarming.

Inspired by the lush natural surroundings, each piece is carefully shaped by hand and carved with attention to comfort and usability.

The soft ivory surface is created using a traditional Japanese *kohiki* technique, highlighting the warm, natural texture of ceramic.

A Warm Touch of Craftsmanship

The animal motifs are not painted—they are carefully etched into the *kohiki* glaze, giving the lines movement and life.

Each piece is filled with character, blending traditional technique with Sawada’s unique artistic vision.

With a father who is also a Kyoto potter in the Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware traditions, Sawada grew up surrounded by ceramics. Now in his 30s, he has over 20 years of experience and continues to refine his craft with a veteran’s confidence.
