Handmade Kyoto ceramic plate with carved animal design

Realistic, yet full of charm—
Take a quiet moment with your favorite cup or plate.

In the serene countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates pottery that captures the beauty of animals in a warm, lifelike way.

His studio is nestled in nature, inspiring each piece with a gentle and heartwarming presence.

Each item is carefully wheel-thrown and trimmed with usability in mind—making every cup or plate comfortable to hold and use daily.

The soft, milky white of the kohiki glaze enhances the natural warmth of the ceramic clay, giving it a gentle texture only handmade Japanese pottery can offer.

Textured kohiki ceramic by Kyoto potter Sawada

Crafted by Hand, Filled with Warmth

Instead of painting with a brush, the animal motifs are delicately carved by scraping away the kohiki surface—bringing each line to life with motion and character.

The result is a piece with unique artistry, full of gentle energy and warmth.

Born to a family of Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware ceramicists, Sawada has been immersed in pottery since childhood and already has over 20 years of experience in his thirties.

Blending refined technique with a fresh, youthful sensibility, he crafts ceramics rich with Kyoto’s originality and spirit.
