Matcha Bowl Kinshu Shunzan Kiln KOTOPOTTER

Shunzan Kiln, Passed Down at Sennyu-ji Temple in Kyoto

Shunzan Kiln was founded in 1927 at the foot of Mount Higashiyama in Kyoto.

Carrying on the tradition of Kiyomizu ware, the kiln continues to create vessels that showcase beautiful painting and decoration, drawing inspiration from seasonal flora and classical motifs.

Each matcha bowl is finished by hand, possessing the delicacy and elegance characteristic of Kyoto ceramics, with a variety of expressions that can be enjoyed from different viewing angles.

Rich Expressions Born from Layered Handwork

The appeal of Shunzan Kiln lies in the rich expression created by the harmonious combination of the vessel's form, painting, glaze, and decoration.

In addition to delicate brushwork, some pieces incorporate techniques such as gold decoration, luster decoration, and etching, with multiple layers of handwork applied to each matcha bowl.

The kiln's distinctive elegance is also evident in its ability to remain festive without being overly ornate, preserving the soft texture of the clay and glaze.

Shop Owner's Comments

This is Shunzan Kiln's "Kinshu" matcha bowl, featuring vibrant autumn leaves painted across the entire vessel.

The autumn leaves are painted in layered shades of red and iron pigment, depicting a beautiful autumn landscape where the mountains appear to be draped in brocade.

The vivid colored glaze stands out beautifully against the characteristic texture of Shunzan Kiln's clay, evoking a sense of elegance even within its rustic charm.

This seasonal bowl allows you to fully enjoy the deepening autumn and the rich colors of the autumn leaves.
