Shunsan Kiln, Continuing Its Legacy at Sennyu-ji in Kyoto

Shunsan Kiln was founded in 1931 at the foot of Mount Higashiyama in Kyoto, near Sennyu-ji Temple.

While carrying on the tradition of Kiyomizu ware, the kiln continues to create vessels inspired by seasonal flora and classical motifs, showcasing beautiful painting and decoration.

Each matcha bowl is finished by hand, possessing the delicacy and elegance characteristic of Kyoto pottery, with its appearance changing beautifully depending on the angle from which it is viewed.

Rich Expressions Born from Layered Handwork

The appeal of Shunsan Kiln lies in its rich expressions, where the form of the vessel harmonizes with its painting, glaze, and decoration.

Beginning with delicate brushwork, some pieces also incorporate techniques such as gold decoration, luster decoration, and etching, with multiple layers of handwork applied to each matcha bowl.

The kiln’s refined character is also evident in its ability to be elegant without being overly ornate, preserving the soft texture of the clay and glaze.

A Matcha Bowl to Enjoy Both Viewing and Using

Shunsan Kiln cherishes the idea of creating vessels that are enjoyable to look at and bring joy when used.

While the meticulously finished details offer pleasure to behold, the bowl also retains the warmth of a matcha bowl when held in the hand.

Whether enjoyed with a seasonal bowl of matcha or as a piece that brings the craftsmanship of Kyoto into everyday life, this is a work designed to be cherished for many years.

Delivered in a Wooden Box

This matcha bowl will be delivered in a wooden box with a finish that complements the character of the piece.
The inscription on the box is handwritten by the artist, adding value as a mark of authenticity.

It is an ideal piece not only for your home but also as a special gift.

Please consider it a heartfelt gift for celebrations or seasonal greetings for someone special.

Shop Owner’s Comment

This Shunsan Kiln matcha bowl depicts snow quietly falling on a pine tree with branches spreading vigorously.

The pine tree, which retains its green needles even in the bitter cold of winter, has long been a lucky motif symbolizing longevity and constancy. The snow-covered pine needles and branches are delicately rendered to create a scene that evokes the clear air and stillness of winter.

This bowl allows you to enjoy the atmosphere of winter, harmonizing the powerful vitality of the pine with the tranquil beauty of the snowy landscape.
