Shunsan Kiln, Continuing Its Legacy in Sennyu-ji, Kyoto

Shunsan Kiln was founded in 1931 at the foot of Mount Higashiyama in Kyoto, near Sennyu-ji Temple.

While carrying on the tradition of Kiyomizu ware, the kiln continues to create vessels that showcase beautiful painting and decoration, drawing inspiration from seasonal flora and classical motifs.

Each matcha bowl is finished by hand, possessing the delicacy and elegance characteristic of Kyoto ceramics. Its appearance changes depending on the angle from which it is viewed, offering a variety of expressions to enjoy.

Rich Expressions Born from Layered Handwork

The appeal of Shunsan Kiln lies in its rich expressions, where the form of the vessel, its painting, and the glaze and decoration are brought into harmony.

Beginning with delicate brushwork, some pieces also incorporate techniques such as gold decoration, luster decoration, and etching, with multiple layers of handwork applied to create each matcha bowl.

The kiln’s characteristic elegance is also evident in its ability to remain vibrant without being overly ornate, preserving the soft texture of the clay and glaze.

A Matcha Bowl to Enjoy Both Viewing and Using

Shunsan Kiln places great importance on creating vessels that are enjoyable to look at and bring joy when used.

While the carefully finished details offer pleasure to behold, the bowl also provides the warmth and comfort of a matcha bowl when held in the hand.

Whether enjoyed as a bowl for a seasonal bowl of tea or as a piece that brings the craftsmanship of Kyoto into everyday life, this is a work intended to be cherished for many years.

Delivered in a Wooden Box

This matcha bowl will be delivered in a wooden box with a finish that complements the character of the piece.
The inscription on the box is handwritten by the artist, adding value as a mark of authenticity.

It is an ideal choice not only for your own home but also as a special gift.

Please consider it a heartfelt gift for celebrations, seasonal greetings, or other occasions for someone special.

Shop Owner’s Comment

This is Shunsan Kiln’s vibrant “flower-filled” matcha bowl, adorned with colorful flora covering the entire vessel.

Delicate flowers are painted closely together, with their outlines raised using etching and accented with gold decoration to create a luxurious, three-dimensional effect. The soft colors of the flowers and the delicate shimmer of gold overlap, creating a beauty that is both vibrant and elegant.

This graceful, distinctive bowl allows you to fully enjoy the beauty of its intricate overglaze painting and gold decoration.
