Shunsan Kiln, Continuing Its Legacy in Sennyu-ji, Kyoto
Shunsan Kiln was founded in 1931 at the foot of Mount Higashiyama in Kyoto, near Sennyu-ji Temple.
While carrying on the tradition of Kiyomizu ware, the kiln continues to create vessels that showcase beautiful painting and decoration, drawing inspiration from seasonal flora and classic motifs.
Each matcha bowl is finished by hand, possessing the delicacy and elegance characteristic of Kyoto pottery, with a variety of expressions that can be enjoyed from different angles.

Rich Expressions Born from Layered Handwork
The appeal of Shunsan Kiln lies in its rich expressions, where the form of the vessel, its painting, and the glaze and decoration are brought into harmony.
Beginning with delicate brushwork, some pieces incorporate techniques such as gold decoration, luster painting, and irtsu, with multiple layers of handwork applied to create each matcha bowl.
The kiln’s distinctive elegance is also found in its ability to remain glamorous without being overly ornate, preserving the soft texture of the clay and glaze.

Matcha Bowls Enjoyed Both to Behold and Use
Shunsan Kiln cherishes the idea of creating vessels that are enjoyable to look at and bring joy when used.
While the carefully finished details offer pleasure to behold, the bowl also provides a warm, comfortable feel when held.
Whether enjoyed with a seasonal bowl of matcha or as a way to experience Kyoto craftsmanship in everyday life, these pieces are made to be cherished and enjoyed for many years.

Shop Owner’s Comment
This Shunsan Kiln matcha bowl features vibrant autumn leaves painted on a subdued black ceramic surface.
The red and iron-oxide painted leaves stand out beautifully against the rustic, dark brown surface that retains the texture of the clay. The contrast between its simple, rustic character and the glamorous colored painting is striking, creating a scene that evokes the deepening autumn season.
This distinctive bowl harmonizes Shunsan Kiln’s powerful clay body with delicate autumn leaf painting.
