Matcha Bowl - Black Pottery Gold Luster Cherry Blossoms by Shunzan Kiln

Shunzan Kiln: A Legacy Passed Down in Kyoto's Sennyu-ji Temple Area

Shunzan Kiln was founded in 1917 at the foot of Sennyu-ji Temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto.

While preserving the traditions of Kiyomizu-yaki ware, the kiln continues to create vessels that highlight the beauty of their painting and decoration, using seasonal flowers and classical designs as motifs.

Each meticulously handcrafted matcha bowl possesses the delicate elegance and splendor characteristic of Kyoto pottery, offering a variety of expressions depending on the viewing angle.

Rich Expressions Born from Layered Craftsmanship

The charm of Shunzan Kiln lies in its rich expressions, where the shape of the vessel, the painting, and the glaze and decorations are harmoniously blended.

From delicate brush-drawn paintings to the use of techniques such as gold leaf, luster glaze, and slip-trailing (ittchin) in some pieces, each matcha bowl is completed through multiple layers of handwork.

The elegant yet unadorned aesthetic, combined with the soft texture of the clay and glaze, imbues Shunzan Kiln's works with a distinct sense of refined quality.

Matcha Bowls to Enjoy Both Visually and Functionally

What Shunzan Kiln values most is creating "vessels that delight the eye and bring joy when used."

The meticulously crafted decorations offer visual pleasure, while holding the bowl in your hands allows you to truly feel the warmth of a matcha bowl.

These pieces are not only perfect as tea bowls for enjoying a seasonal cup of matcha, but also as a way to experience Kyoto's craftsmanship up close. We hope you will cherish them for a long time.

Comment from the Owner

This Shunzan Kiln matcha bowl features a cherry blossom design in gold on black pottery, reminiscent of a muted, soft, rusty black-brown.

The golden cherry blossoms beautifully emerge from the calm, brownish surface of the vessel, adding elegant splendor to its rustic charm. The contrast between the delicate shimmer of the gold and the simple, warm ground color is also captivating.

It is a profound bowl where subtlety and splendor harmoniously blend.
