The Landscape of Tenmoku, Born from Fire
This Tenmoku matcha bowl boasts deeply lustrous colors and a complex, beautiful "landscape" created by the glaze.
Tenmoku glazes, rich in iron, produce various expressions depending on the firing temperature, the flames, and the conditions within the kiln. The flowing, mixing glazes form crystals and speckles, creating a unique landscape in each bowl. This beauty, created by glaze and fire, cannot be fully controlled by human hands.

Historic Tenmoku Tea Bowls from China
The origin of Tenmoku tea bowls lies in the black-glazed bowls fired during China's Song dynasty. In the tea ceremony (tencha) popular at the time, black bowls that beautifully showcased the white foam of the tea were highly prized and brought to Japan by Zen monks and others.
The deep-toned glaze and elegant, refined form complement modern matcha beautifully. This matcha bowl is not just a tool for preparing matcha, but also one that makes you want to admire the landscape created by the glaze itself.

Teiichi Oketani, a Ceramist Who Pursued Tenmoku
Teiichi Oketani II was born in the pottery region of Higashiyama, Kyoto. He learned pottery from Teiichi I, who specialized in Tenmoku glazes, inheriting his skills while also dedicating many years to exploring the expression of Tenmoku himself.
With Tenmoku, even slight differences in firing conditions can significantly alter the glaze's tone and pattern. Confronting these unpredictable kiln changes and bringing forth beautiful landscapes within each bowl is a major charm of Teiichi Oketani's work.
No two Tenmoku tea bowls have the same expression; each possesses different colors and glaze landscapes. This bowl allows you to enjoy the profound world of glazes, characteristic of a master who has long engaged with Tenmoku.
