Tenmoku Landscapes Born from Fire

This Tenmoku matcha bowl boasts deep, lustrous colors and intricate patterns created by the glaze.

Tenmoku glaze, rich in iron, produces diverse expressions depending on the firing temperature, flame, and kiln conditions. The flowing and mixing glaze forms crystals and patterns, each bowl unique. Enjoy the beauty born from glaze and fire, a beauty that cannot be fully controlled by human hands.

Historic Tenmoku Tea Bowls from China

The origin of Tenmoku tea bowls lies in the black-glazed bowls fired during China's Song dynasty. In the prevalent method of whisking tea, black bowls that beautifully showcased the white tea foam were highly prized and brought to Japan by Zen monks and others.

The deep glaze and refined, well-defined form complement modern matcha beautifully. It is a matcha bowl that allows you to enjoy not only its use in preparing matcha, but also the glaze-created landscape itself.

Teiichi Oketani, a Ceramist Who Pursued Tenmoku

Teiichi Oketani II was born in the pottery district of Higashiyama, Kyoto. He learned pottery from his father, Teiichi I, who excelled in Tenmoku glaze, and inherited his skills while also dedicating many years to exploring the expression of Tenmoku.

With Tenmoku, even slight differences in firing conditions can significantly alter the glaze and patterns. Confronting these unpredictable kiln transformations and bringing out beautiful landscapes within each bowl is a major appeal of Teiichi Oketani's work.

No two Tenmoku tea bowls have the same expression; each possesses unique colors and glaze scenery. This bowl offers a glimpse into the profound world of glaze, characteristic of a master craftsman who has dedicated years to Tenmoku.
