Tenmoku Glaze Born from the Flames

This Tenmoku chawan (matcha bowl) boasts deep, lustrous colors and a complex landscape created by the glaze.

Tenmoku glaze, rich in iron, produces diverse expressions depending on the firing temperature, flames, and kiln conditions. The glaze flows, mixes, and forms crystals and speckles, resulting in a unique landscape in each bowl. It's a beauty born from the interplay of glaze and fire, something that cannot be fully controlled by human hands.

Tenmoku Chawan: A Historic Lineage from China

The origin of Tenmoku chawan lies in the black-glazed bowls fired during China's Song Dynasty. At that time, in the popular practice of whisked tea, black bowls that beautifully showcased the white foam of the tea were highly prized and brought to Japan by Zen monks and others.

The deep glaze tones and elegant, refined form complement modern matcha beautifully. It's not just a tool for preparing matcha; it's a matcha bowl that makes you want to admire the landscape created by the glaze itself.

Teiichi Oketani: A Ceramist Who Pursued Tenmoku

Teiichi Oketani II was born in Kyoto's Higashiyama pottery district. He learned pottery from Teiichi I, who excelled in Tenmoku glaze, and inherited his skills while also dedicating many years to exploring the expression of Tenmoku himself.

Tenmoku's glaze tone and patterns change significantly with even slight differences in firing conditions. The great appeal of Teiichi Oketani's work lies in confronting these unpredictable kiln transformations and bringing out a beautiful landscape in each bowl.

No two pieces have the same expression; each Tenmoku chawan possesses a unique color and glaze pattern. This bowl offers a glimpse into the profound world of glazes, characteristic of a master craftsman who has dedicated years to Tenmoku.

It is a highly refined piece with beautiful patterns and deep colors, but a glaze pool formed on the outside, giving it a unique character different from typical works.

This piece is recommended for those who can appreciate the glaze pool as part of its "landscape" and enjoy its individuality. It is a special bowl that allows you to experience the beauty of Tenmoku glaze, characteristic of master craftsman Teiichi Oketani.
