Tenmoku Glaze: A Landscape Created by Fire

This Tenmoku matcha bowl boasts deeply lustrous colors and complex patterns born from its glaze.

Tenmoku glaze, rich in iron, creates diverse expressions depending on the firing temperature, the flames, and the conditions within the kiln. The glaze flows, mixes, and crystallizes into patterns and speckles, making each bowl unique. You can enjoy the beauty created by the glaze and fire, which cannot be entirely controlled by human hands.

Tenmoku Tea Bowls: A History from China

The origin of Tenmoku tea bowls lies in the black-glazed bowls fired in China during the Song Dynasty. During that period, the popular powdered tea ceremony prized black bowls that beautifully contrasted with the white tea foam. These bowls were then brought to Japan by Zen monks and others.

The deep-colored glaze and refined, sleek form complement modern matcha perfectly. More than just a tool for preparing matcha, this bowl is one you'll want to admire for the landscape created by its glaze.

Jotei Okutani: A Ceramic Artist Dedicated to Tenmoku

Jotei Okutani II was born in the pottery district of Higashiyama, Kyoto. He learned pottery from his father, Jotei I, who specialized in Tenmoku glaze, inheriting his techniques while also pursuing the expression of Tenmoku for many years.

In Tenmoku, even slight variations in firing conditions can dramatically alter the glaze and patterns. The great appeal of Jotei Okutani's work lies in his ability to confront these unpredictable kiln changes and draw out beautiful scenery within each bowl.

No two Tenmoku tea bowls have the same expression; each possesses different colors and glaze patterns. This bowl allows you to enjoy the profound world of glazes, a testament to a master who has dedicated years to Tenmoku.
