Mug – Yudei Glaze by Yotaro Takemura KOTOPOTTER

A Mug to Enjoy Subtle Expressions in Everyday Life

The “Yudei” series is one of the collections created by Yotaro Takemura at Dainichi Kiln.

While it is a vessel meant for daily use, it is also something you can quietly enjoy for its changing expressions.

Not only when you use it, but even when it is simply sitting on a table, it subtly changes the atmosphere of the space.

Easy to incorporate into everyday life, yet somehow able to refresh your mood.

This series represents one contemporary expression of Kyoto pottery, where playfulness and handcraft are balanced in a comfortable way.

Not Painting Color, but Layering It

The “Yudei” series is created using a unique technique in which layers of glaze are sprayed on with an airbrush.

Each layer softly overlaps and blends at the boundaries, creating gentle gradations that cannot be achieved with a brush.

The sense of depth in the colors, impossible to express with a single tone, is unique to this technique.

Treating color itself as a form of “expression” is the core concept of this series.

Subtle Variations Within a Carefully Designed Expression

The “Yudei” series is produced using techniques that allow the intended layering and shading of colors to be reproduced with stability.

Although each piece is made according to the same design and process, slight differences appear in how the glazes overlap and blur.

The overall impression remains consistent, yet if you look closely, each piece has its own small, unique character.

These quiet variations are what give the work the depth that only handcraft can provide.

Contemporary Kyoto Pottery Born in a Quiet Setting

Dainichi Kiln is located in a calm environment near Kansyuji Temple in Kyoto.

While grounded in the lineage of Kyoto ceramics, Yotaro Takemura continues to explore expressions that are not confined by traditional frameworks.

The “Yudei” series is one of these ongoing explorations, focusing on the possibilities of color and texture developed through his practice.
