Unceasing pursuit of glazes

Yoshinori Izumi, who has his studio in the satoyama (foothills) of Keihoku, Kyoto, has been researching glazes for over 50 years.

Building on the knowledge he cultivated at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture, he has meticulously examined changes caused by firing temperature, glaze composition, and the way the flame hits the piece, pursuing unique kiln-change expressions.

Izumi's work is not merely dependent on chance; it is built upon data and experience accumulated over many years.

Nevertheless, changes beyond prediction occur within the kiln, and no two pieces ever have the same appearance.

Beautiful colors created by fire

Izumi's Tenmoku and celadon works exhibit complex color changes created by firing.

The deep gradations created by the flowing glaze and the delicate kiln changes resulting from the reaction of mineral components show expressions akin to natural phenomena.

Vessels that blend into daily life

While Izumi's vessels possess high artistic value, they are created with an emphasis on everyday use.

From his extensive experience spanning many years crafting various vessels such as sake cups, teacups, and matcha bowls, meticulous attention is paid to the feel of the rim, ease of holding, and user comfort.

With a quiet presence, these vessels enhance food and drink. They are pieces that allow you to enjoy the changing expressions of the glaze and light with every use.

Comment from the Owner

This is a mug from the "Ginsei" series, featuring a beautiful silver luster created by firing.

Its expression delicately changes depending on the light and viewing angle, allowing you to enjoy the profound scenery unique to Tenmoku glaze.

The varying kiln-change expressions of each piece are also part of its charm.
