Small kohiki cup by Takanobu Sawada

Realistic, yet endearing.
Take a quiet moment with your favorite cup.

In the satoyama of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada works from his studio surrounded by rich natural scenery.

His pottery features animals that are realistic yet warm, brought to life with a gentle touch.

Each piece is carefully shaped by hand and trimmed to fit comfortably when held.

The soft, milky-white kohiki clay brings out the natural warmth of the pottery.

Hand-carved animal cup by Kyoto artist Takanobu Sawada

The warmth of handcrafted work

Instead of using a brush, the animal designs are created by carving into the kohiki surface.

Each line has movement and personality, resulting in a piece full of warmth and originality.

Born into a family of Kyo and Kiyomizu ware artisans, Sawada has been immersed in pottery since childhood, with over 20 years of experience.

In his 30s, he is already a seasoned craftsman with refined skills and a fresh artistic vision.

Combining youthful sensitivity with honed craftsmanship, Sawada creates one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect Kyoto's rich tradition. Experience their charm in your everyday life.
