Realistic, yet endearing—
Take a break with your favorite cup.
Based in the serene countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, Japanese pottery artist Takanobu Sawada creates traditional handmade ceramics that feature lifelike yet charming animals.
Each piece is carefully shaped by hand and trimmed with attention to how it feels when held. The soft ivory hue of the kohiki glaze enhances the gentle, organic texture that is unique to traditional Japanese pottery.
Feel the warmth of handcrafted Kyoto ceramic ware
The animal motifs are not painted but carved directly into the clay, bringing each figure to life with expressive lines and subtle movement.
This process results in ceramics that are not only visually engaging but also rich in warmth and individuality.
As the son of a Kyoto Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware artist, Sawada has been immersed in ceramic traditions from an early age and has over 20 years of experience—an accomplished craftsman even in his 30s.
Blending youthful creativity with refined skills, Sawada continues to produce pottery full of originality—pieces that reflect both Kyoto’s long heritage and a fresh perspective.
Let his work bring a touch of handmade warmth and Japanese tradition to your everyday life.
