Realistic yet charming—
Take a relaxing break with your favorite cup.
In the scenic countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates heartwarming pieces surrounded by nature.
His pottery features realistic animal designs infused with warmth and personality, brought to life through traditional Japanese techniques.
Each tumbler is carefully shaped by hand, with thoughtful trimming that ensures a comfortable fit in the hand.
The soft, milky kohiki glaze highlights the gentle character of the clay—one of the many reasons handmade Japanese ceramics are so cherished.
The warmth of handmade craft
Rather than painted, the animal motifs are carved directly into the kohiki surface, using a traditional sgraffito technique.
Each line feels alive, capturing both movement and personality, and offering a distinct charm unique to Sawada’s artistry.
Born into a family of Kyoto pottery artisans, Sawada has been immersed in ceramics since childhood and now has over 20 years of experience.
Though in his 30s, his mastery of technique and creative vision make him a true veteran in the field.
Sawada blends refined skill with fresh creativity, resulting in original ceramic works that reflect the spirit of Kyoto’s traditional pottery culture.
Add a touch of handmade Kyoto artistry to your daily moments with this delightful piece.
