Kyoto handmade ceramic tumbler with animal carving

Realistic yet irresistibly charming—
Enjoy a quiet moment with your favorite cup.

In the lush, rural landscapes of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada crafts handmade pottery inspired by the animals and nature surrounding his studio.

His pieces capture lifelike expressions with warmth, carved into gentle kohiki-glazed surfaces that embody the soft beauty of traditional Japanese ceramic art.

Each form is shaped by hand with care and then trimmed to ensure a comfortable, easy-to-use design. The milky white glaze enhances the earthy texture unique to handmade pottery.

Feel the warmth of the artist’s hand

Rather than using a brush, Sawada brings each animal to life by carving directly into the clay, creating dynamic lines that are full of movement and personality.

This distinctive technique results in one-of-a-kind pieces that combine artistic expression with traditional craftsmanship.

Born into a family of Kyoto potters specializing in Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware, Sawada has been working with clay since childhood. Now in his 30s, he brings over two decades of experience to every creation.
