Handmade Kyoto ceramic cup by Takanobu Sawada

Realistic yet endearing—
Take a relaxing moment with your favorite cup.

From his studio nestled in the scenic countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates pottery inspired by the animals of the natural world.

His pieces feature lifelike yet heartwarming animal figures, brought to life through masterful craftsmanship and a tender touch.

Each cup is individually hand-shaped and trimmed for comfort, designed to fit naturally in your hand and elevate your everyday rituals.

The soft white base of kohiki glaze gives each piece a warm, organic feel unique to handmade Japanese pottery.

Carved animal design on kohiki pottery

Crafted by hand with warmth and care

Rather than using a brush, Sawada carves his animal motifs directly into the kohiki surface, giving each line a sense of motion and individuality.

The result is a design that feels expressive and deeply personal—more than decoration, it's a glimpse into the artist’s creative world.

As the son of a Kyoto ceramicist, Sawada grew up surrounded by the traditions of Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware. With over 20 years of experience, he is already a seasoned craftsman in his 30s.

His work blends Kyoto’s rich ceramic heritage with a fresh artistic sensibility, resulting in truly original handmade ceramics.
