Large handmade ceramic mug by Takanobu Sawada from Kyoto

Realistic yet full of charm—
Relax and unwind with a cup made just for you.

In the quiet mountains of Nantan, Kyoto, Japanese ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada brings his love for animals and nature into the world of traditional pottery.

Each piece features lifelike animal motifs expressed with a warmth that makes them feel alive. The forms are carefully shaped by hand, with functionality and comfort always in mind.

The gentle milky-white surface, achieved using the traditional kohiki technique, enhances the soft, natural feel of the clay and highlights the essence of handmade ceramic art from Japan.

Craftsmanship you can feel in every curve

Instead of painting, Sawada carves the animal designs directly into the kohiki clay, giving each figure motion and depth that draws the eye and stirs the heart.

His expressive style and delicate technique result in one-of-a-kind pieces that carry both playfulness and artistic soul.

As the son of a Kyo and Kiyomizu ware potter, Sawada has been working with ceramics since childhood. Now with over 20 years of experience, he continues to refine his craft and bring new life to traditional Kyoto pottery.
