A Matcha Bowl by Third-Generation Nakamura Akimune, Carrying on the Tradition of Kyo Ware

A matcha bowl by Kyoto potter Nakamura Akimune III. Born in Kyoto's Higashiyama district in 1947, he grew up in a family with a long history of pottery.

He studied pottery under his father, the second-generation Akimune, and inherited the traditional overglaze painting techniques of Kyo ware. Certified a traditional craft artisan of Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware in 1994, he has spent many years creating tea ceramics in Kyoto.

Delicate Overglaze Painting Depicting Classic Motifs

Drawing on the traditional decorative styles of Kyo ware exemplified by Nonomura Ninsé and Ogata Kenzan, he expresses seasonal flowers and plants as well as classic patterns in a rich array of overglaze colors.

The bowl is characterized by delicate depictions created with careful brushwork and overglaze painting that emphasizes harmony of color. It possesses a sense of calm amidst its splendor, conveying the elegant decorative beauty unique to Kyo ware.

Distinguished Tea Ceramics Reflecting the Beauty of the Four Seasons

The overglaze painting, which captures the changing seasons, evokes the appreciation of nature and aesthetic sensibilities long cherished in the tea ceremony.

The appearance created by classic motifs and masterful skill exudes the distinctive character of Kyo ware, passed down through generations. This traditional Kyo ware matcha bowl adds seasonal charm and elegance to any tea gathering.

Shop Owner's Comment

This is a matcha bowl by Nakamura Akimune, featuring chrysanthemums painted in splendor against a flowing ash glaze landscape.

The glaze, which flows across the surface of the bowl, creates a sense of gentle movement and depth. Layered upon this are chrysanthemums raised in soft relief with Japanese paints and delicate chrysanthemums painted in gold, resulting in a design with splendor and three-dimensional depth.

A charming bowl where the elegance of the chrysanthemums and the decorative beauty characteristic of Kyo ware stand out against the subdued texture of the ash glaze.
