Kiyomizu Ware Tea Ceramics by Kaifū Yagi

Crafted in Yamashiro, Kyoto—an area close to Uji and long associated with Japanese tea culture—this matcha bowl is created by Kaifū Yagi, a Kiyomizu-ware kiln master who has dedicated decades to tea ceramics.

With precise wheel work and a refined, balanced form designed for tea preparation, the bowl reflects the quiet confidence and stability that come from years of handmade craftsmanship in traditional Kyoto pottery.

Each matcha bowl is carefully hand-painted, resulting in subtle variations in brushwork, spacing, and expression.

Tea Ceramic Artist: Kaifū Yagi

Born in 1950 in Yamashiro, Kyoto.

After completing his studies at the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Training School, he apprenticed under the first-generation ceramic artist Josui Kato.

Focusing on traditional Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware tea ceramics, he has received numerous awards at exhibitions such as the Kyoto Ceramic Art Exhibition and overglaze enamel competitions.

In 2003, he was officially recognized as a Traditional Craftsman of Kiyomizu Ware.

He continues to create pottery at his studio in Yamashiro-Taga, Kyoto.
