Hiroshi Takeuchi at Shuhodo : Urban Sophistication Meets Kiyomizu Ware

Ikkanjin, Kōchi, Sometsuke—Where Classical Motifs Meet Modern Expression

Located in the quiet Higashiyama district of Kyoto, Shuhodo is a ceramic studio where Yutaka Takeuchi creates distinctive handmade works that bridge tradition and contemporary style.

By blending classical Japanese motifs with a modern touch, Takeuchi has developed a signature style that resonates with admirers of Kyoto pottery, both in Japan and beyond.

The Playful Spirit of Ikkanjin

One of Takeuchi's signature motifs is the *Ikkanjin*, originally from China and long used in Japanese tea ware. This whimsical figure, often shown peering into a well, is affectionately called “Ido-nozoki” (well gazer).

By layering this classic design with a mix of *sometsuke* (blue-and-white underglaze), *icchin* (raised line decoration), and *Kōchi*-style glazing, Takeuchi creates pieces that embody a delicate balance of tradition and playful creativity.

Tableware That Leaves a Lasting Impression

Takeuchi’s ceramics combine multiple decorative techniques, resulting in pieces that brighten any table setting while leaving a memorable impression. The intricate finishes and clever designs reflect not only aesthetic excellence but also a warmth that fits seamlessly into everyday life.

Ever-Evolving Through Solo Exhibitions

Takeuchi holds annual solo exhibitions, not only unveiling new works but also connecting directly with those who appreciate his art. These personal interactions often serve as inspiration for his next creative steps, pushing his work forward year after year.

Endless Passion Beyond Sixty

Even after turning sixty, Takeuchi’s passion for handmade ceramic creation shows no signs of slowing. His energy and enthusiasm continue to shine through in each piece, offering joy and richness to the everyday lives of those who use them.
