Takanobu Sawada is a ceramic artist who has a studio in the satoyama (foothills) of Nantan City, Kyoto.
Surrounded by rich natural scenery, he creates vessels featuring realistic yet warm animal designs.
Each piece is carefully molded and shaped with usability in mind.
The soft, milky white slipware base enhances the gentle texture unique to ceramics.
Vessels that convey the warmth of handcrafted work
The animal patterns are not drawn with a brush but are created by scratching away the slipware base.
Each line has movement, resulting in a unique and warm finish.
Takanobu Sawada, whose father is a ceramic artist of Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki, has been familiar with pottery since childhood and already has 20 years of experience in pottery making.
At just 30 years old, he is a highly skilled craftsman who has reached the level of a veteran.
Mr. Sawada, with his youthful sensibility and refined techniques, creates original vessels that are uniquely Kyoto.
