Realistic, yet irresistibly charming—
Take a relaxing break with your favorite cup.
In the serene countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates pottery that brings animals to life with warmth and realism.
Inspired by the natural beauty surrounding his studio, Sawada crafts each piece by hand, shaping and carving them with comfort and functionality in mind.
The soft white surface of the kohiki glaze enhances the gentle, earthy texture unique to handcrafted ceramics.
Feel the warmth of handmade craftsmanship
Instead of using a brush, Sawada carves directly into the kohiki clay surface to create his animal illustrations—a technique known as sgraffito.
Each line feels alive with movement, resulting in a finish that is both expressive and full of personality.
The son of a Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware potter, Sawada has been surrounded by ceramics since childhood and has over 20 years of experience in the field.
Now in his 30s, he brings veteran-level skill and a fresh artistic sensibility to his work.
Sawada’s pieces reflect both refined technique and youthful creativity—blending Kyoto’s ceramic heritage with his own original style.
We hope you’ll enjoy discovering his one-of-a-kind creations and welcoming them into your daily routine.
