Artist Profile

Noboru Yamaoka

  • Born in Mie Prefecture, 1942
  • Graduated from Kyoto Ceramic Training School, 1959
  • Trained for 10 years under master Zenjiro Ueyama
  • Established independent studio “Yamaoka Togaken,” 1969
  • Received the artist name “Shō” (Noboru) from his teacher
  • Exhibited at the 1990 International Garden and Greenery Exposition, Osaka
  • Selected three times for the Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware Exhibition
  • Selected for the 1992 Tanko Biennale Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition
  • Awarded the Kyoto Mayor’s Prize at the Kyoto Iroe Ceramic Exhibition, 1998
  • Governor’s Prize at the Overglaze Enamel Ceramic Exhibition (three times)
  • Numerous awards and selections in ceramic design competitions
