About the Artist

Zensho Yamaoka

  • Born in 1942 in Mie Prefecture
  • Graduated from Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Technical School in 1959; apprenticed under master Zenpo
  • Began producing work under the name “Zensho” in 1969
  • Selected multiple times for the Tanko Biennale Tea Art Exhibition (1992–1998)
  • Received Kyoto Governor’s Prize three times at Kyoto Ceramic Painting Exhibition (1998)
  • Won awards twice at Kyoto Design Competition (2000–2008)
  • Five-time winner at Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware Exhibition (2000–2008)
  • Selected for National Traditional Craftsman Exhibition (2001)
  • Held “Zensho Exhibition” at Nihombashi Mitsukoshi (2002)
  • Certified as a Traditional Craftsperson in 2006
  • Held “Zensho Exhibition” at Kyoto Takashimaya (2008)
  • Awarded Uji City Tourism Association Prize at Kyo-ware Exhibition (2010)
  • Received Merit Award at National Traditional Craftsman Convention (2011)
  • Featured on NHK’s “Beauty of Japan” (Kyoto Ceramics episode) in 2012
  • Awarded Kyoto Ceramic Union Chairman’s Prize in 2013
