A Splendid Overglaze-Enamelled Matcha Bowl Carrying on the Tradition of Kyo Ware

An overglaze-enamelled matcha bowl by Kyoto potter Karin Miyakawa. Born as the fourth son of the first generation Karin Miyakawa, who founded the renowned Kyo ware kiln Ryukoku-gama, she studied pottery under her father.

After also training in Japanese painting, she became independent in 1981. A potter who has inherited traditional Kyo ware techniques, she was certified as a Traditional Craftsperson of Kyo Ware and Kiyomizu Ware in 2002.

Profound and Splendid Decoration Reflecting Traditional Beauty

Drawing on the tradition of overglaze-enamelled Kyo ware exemplified by Nonomura Ninsé, it expresses classical motifs with refined elegance.

Drawing on the sure descriptive skills cultivated through Japanese painting, it features meticulously applied painting down to the finest details and profound decoration in rich colors. While valuing traditional styles, it is finished as a piece that combines splendor and elegance.

A Refined Presence to Adorn the Tea Ceremony

The splendid painting spreading across the entire vessel evokes the decorative beauty cultivated by Kyo Ware and Kiyomizu Ware. The presence created by the combination of classical motifs and rich colors exudes the distinctive elegance unique to traditional tea ceramics.

This matcha bowl adds elegance and splendor to the tea ceremony, where the beauty of the seasons is cherished.

Shop Owner's Comment

This is Karin Miyakawa's matcha bowl, featuring vivid autumn leaves and a Japanese white-eye (yamagara) painted on a soft, Ninsé-style vessel body.

The delicate expression of autumn leaves dyed in fall colors and a lovely Japanese white-eye on a warm white body. The natural composition, placing a small bird among the colored leaves, creates a peaceful scene reminiscent of an autumn mountain village.

A bowl that allows you to enjoy the atmosphere of autumn, harmonizing the graceful overglaze enamelling reminiscent of Ninsé's tradition with Karin Miyakawa's uniquely meticulous brushwork.
