Matcha Bowl Adorned with Seasonal Flowers
This matcha bowl is from Kakouzan Kiln, a family pottery that has been active for four generations in Gojozaka, Kyoto. It features seasonal flowers and plants that adorn Japan's four seasons, capturing beautiful seasonal scenery within the vessel. While vibrant in color, it also exudes the simple beauty of nature, making it a perfect bowl for tea ceremonies or for adding seasonal color to your daily cup of tea.

Elegant Colors Painted with Traditional Japanese Pigments
At Kakouzan Kiln, each piece is hand-painted, preserving traditional Japanese pigments. A key characteristic is the subtle unevenness and three-dimensionality created by layering colors with delicate brushwork and meticulously applying the paints.
The soft hues, intricate depictions, and brushstrokes unique to hand-painting harmonize with the warm texture of the pottery and the vibrant designs. This allows for a rich expression that changes with viewing angle and light.

Kakouzan Kiln's Pottery, Following the Style of Kenzan
The artistic style of Kakouzan Kiln inherits the aesthetic sensibilities of Ogata Kenzan, a prominent Edo period potter. Kenzan was a master who created numerous free and elegant works using familiar natural motifs such as flowers and plants, combining the rustic texture of pottery with painterly designs.
Kakouzan Kiln's pottery expresses the nature of the four seasons in a flowing manner, while utilizing the warm texture unique to earthenware. Inheriting the aesthetic sensibilities of Kyoto ware that stem from Kenzan, these matcha bowls are finished to be vibrant and approachable, suitable for modern living.

Comment from the Shop Owner
This is a "Unkin" (cloud and brocade) matcha bowl, depicting spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage on a single vessel.
Unkin, which likens cherry blossoms to clouds and autumn leaves to brocade, is a traditional design that allows one to enjoy the beauty of Japan's spring and autumn simultaneously. Using transparent Japanese pigments, the plumply raised cherry blossoms and autumn leaves vividly adorn the entire bowl.
This is a truly characteristic Kakouzan Kiln bowl, where you can enjoy the flowing brushwork reminiscent of Kenzan and the elegant colors typical of Kyoto ware.
