Matcha Bowl – Hokusai ‘Red Fuji’ | Kyoto Pottery

A Masterpiece Reviving a Japanese Classic

Ichinyo Yamamoto, a Kyoto ceramic artist based in Uji, has dedicated more than half a century to creating traditional handmade Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware.

This matcha bowl is a special work inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s celebrated series “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.”

The design centers on one of the most iconic images in Japanese art—‘Red Fuji’ (Gaifū Kaisei)—reinterpreted through the refined techniques of Kyoto pottery.

The Vivid Depth of Kōchi Glaze

The most striking feature of this ceramic piece is its luminous, transparent color—made possible by the traditional Kyoto glaze known as Kōchi.

The raised frames surrounding each motif are carefully built up by hand, adding depth and dimension similar to carved relief work.

Through skilled technique and delicate handwork, the bowl acquires an elegant, sculptural presence that highlights the drama of Hokusai’s composition.

Bringing Kyoto Pottery into Everyday Life

This bowl reflects the artist’s decades of experience and the refined design sensibility unique to Kyoto’s ceramic traditions.

Enjoy it at tea gatherings, use it for daily matcha practice, or display it as a striking art piece that celebrates the beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

Presented in a Wooden Box

This matcha bowl is delivered in a wooden box crafted to match the character of the piece. The inscription on the lid is handwritten by the artist, adding authenticity and collector’s value.

It is a thoughtful choice for personal enjoyment and an exceptional gift for special celebrations or seasonal greetings.

*Please note: the wooden box requires approximately two weeks to complete.
