Endless Pursuit of Glaze

Yoshinori Izumi, who has a studio in the satoyama (foothills) of Keihoku, Kyoto, has been researching glazes for over 50 years.

Based on the knowledge gained at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology, he has pursued unique kiln transformation expressions by meticulously verifying changes due to firing temperature, glaze composition, and the way the flame hits the piece.

Izumi's works are not merely dependent on chance; they are built upon data and experience accumulated over many years.

Even so, unpredictable changes occur inside the kiln, ensuring that no two pieces ever have the same appearance.

Beautiful Colors Created by Fire

Izumi's tenmoku and celadon works display complex color changes that emerge during firing.

The deep gradations created by the flowing glaze and the delicate kiln transformations resulting from the reaction of mineral components exhibit expressions much like natural phenomena.

Tableware for Everyday Life

While Izumi's vessels possess high artistic quality, they are created with an emphasis on being used in daily life.

Drawing on many years of experience crafting a wide range of vessels, including sake cups, teacups, and matcha bowls, meticulous attention is paid to features such as lip feel, ease of holding, and overall usability.

They possess a quiet presence, yet enhance the food and drinks served in them. These vessels allow you to enjoy the changing expressions of the glaze and the interplay of light with each use.

Comment from the Owner

This is a small teacup from the "Shooting Star" series, featuring beautiful blue and silver iridescence that appears during firing.

Its appearance changes depending on the angle of light and how it's viewed, allowing you to enjoy the flowing glaze patterns.

The unique kiln transformation of each piece is also appealing, making it a work that quietly enriches your tea time.
