Endless Pursuit of Glaze Perfection

Yoshinori Izumi, who has his studio in the satoyama of Keihoku, Kyoto, has been researching glazes for over 50 years.

Building on the knowledge gained at the Kyoto City Industrial Research Institute, he has pursued unique kiln-change expressions by meticulously verifying changes based on firing temperature, glaze composition, and the way the flame hits the piece.

Izumi's works are not simply reliant on chance; they are built upon years of accumulated data and experience.

Nevertheless, unpredictable changes occur inside the kiln, ensuring that no two pieces ever have the same appearance.

Beautiful Colors Created by Fire

Izumi's Tenmoku and celadon works display complex color changes produced by firing.

The deep gradations created by the flowing glaze and the delicate kiln changes resulting from the reaction of mineral components create expressions that resemble natural phenomena.

Utensils for Everyday Living

While Izumi's ceramics possess a high artistic quality, they are created with the intention of being used in daily life.

With years of experience crafting a wide range of vessels including sake cups, teacups, and matcha bowls, meticulous attention is paid to features like the feel on the lips, ease of holding, and overall comfort in use.

While possessing a quiet presence, these vessels enhance food and drinks. They are designed to allow you to enjoy the expression of the glaze and the changes in light with each use.

Shop Owner's Comment

This "kumidashi" bowl features a beautiful gradation from red to gold appearing within the jet-black of the Tenmoku glaze.

Its expression changes depending on how the light hits it and the viewing angle, allowing you to enjoy a profound landscape.

The unique kiln-change expression of each piece is also captivating, making it a work that will make your tea time special.
