Yoshinori Izumi, who has a studio in the satoyama (foothills) of Keihoku, Kyoto, has been researching glazes for over 50 years.

Building on the knowledge he cultivated at the Kyoto Municipal Industrial Research Institute, he has meticulously verified changes due to firing temperature, glaze composition, and flame exposure, striving for his unique kiln-change expressions.

Izumi's work is not merely dependent on chance; it is built upon years of accumulated data and experience.

Even so, unpredictable changes occur within the kiln, and no two pieces will ever be exactly alike.

Beautiful Colors Created by Fire

Izumi's Tenmoku and celadon works exhibit complex color changes created through firing.

The deep gradations created by the flowing glaze and the delicate kiln changes resulting from mineral reactions display an expression as if they were natural phenomena.
