Handcrafted Kyoto ceramic tumbler with animal design

Realistic yet endearing—
Take a relaxing moment with your favorite cup.

In the countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, Japanese ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates charming pieces in his peaceful mountain studio.

Surrounded by nature, Sawada brings to life realistic yet heartwarming animal motifs—each filled with character and warmth.

Every tumbler is carefully hand-shaped and trimmed for a comfortable hold, with form and function thoughtfully considered in every step.

The gentle, milky white clay body is created using the traditional kohiki technique, highlighting the soft, organic texture of handmade Japanese pottery.

Feel the Warmth of Handcrafted Work

The animal designs are not painted but carved into the kohiki surface, revealing expressive lines that give each creature a lifelike presence.

This unique carving method results in a tactile charm and a distinctive artistic expression found only in handmade Kyoto ceramic pieces.

Born into a family of Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware potters, Sawada has been immersed in the ceramic world since childhood. With over 20 years of experience, he now stands as a highly skilled artisan—even in his thirties.

Combining refined craftsmanship with a youthful artistic eye, he creates pieces that embody the originality and spirit of Kyoto tradition.
