Handmade pottery cup by Takanobu Sawada with carved animal design

Realistic yet endearing—
Take a moment to unwind with your favorite cup.

In the tranquil countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates his work surrounded by nature.

His ceramics feature lifelike animals rendered with warmth and personality—each one inviting a sense of calm to your table.

Every piece is meticulously shaped by hand and trimmed with usability in mind, resulting in a form that feels naturally comfortable in your hand.

The soft, milky-white kohiki glaze brings out the gentle texture of the clay, adding a warmth that is unique to handmade pottery.

Hand-carved animal design on kohiki pottery

Hand-carved warmth in every line

The animal illustrations are not painted but carved out of the kohiki base, using a traditional sgraffito technique.

Each line is filled with expressive motion, showcasing Sawada’s artistic personality and heartfelt craftsmanship.

As the son of a Kyo-ware potter, Sawada has been surrounded by ceramics since childhood and now boasts over 20 years of experience.

Despite being in his 30s, he has already reached a level of mastery, combining youthful creativity with technical excellence.
