Matcha Bowl - Gold Relief Cherry Blossoms by Shunzan Kiln

Shunzan Kiln, Carried on at Sennyu-ji Temple in Kyoto

Shunzan Kiln was founded in 1917 at the foot of Sennyu-ji Temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto.

While preserving the tradition of Kiyomizu-yaki, they continue to create ceramics that highlight the beauty of their painting and decoration, using seasonal flowers and classical designs as their themes.

Each handmade matcha bowl possesses the delicate elegance typical of Kyoto pottery, offering various expressions depending on the viewing angle.

Rich Expressions Born from Layered Craftsmanship

The charm of Shunzan Kiln lies in its rich expression, where the shape of the vessel, the painting, and the glaze and decoration are all in harmony.

From delicate brushwork to techniques such as gold overlay, luster painting, and icchin (slip trailing) for some pieces, each matcha bowl is finished with multiple layers of craftsmanship.

Even with its華やか (hanayaka - ornate) appearance, it avoids excessive embellishment, retaining the soft texture of the clay and glaze, which conveys the refined quality characteristic of Shunzan Kiln.

Matcha Bowls to Enjoy Both Visually and Functionally

What Shunzan Kiln values is creating "vessels that are enjoyable to look at and bring joy when used."

The meticulously finished decorations offer the pleasure of appreciation, and when held, one can truly feel the warmth of a matcha bowl.

These pieces are not only perfect as tea bowls for enjoying a seasonal cup of matcha but also as a way to experience Kyoto craftsmanship up close, meant to be cherished for a long time.
