Matcha Bowl - Lusterware Cherry Blossoms by Shunzan Kiln

Shunzan Kiln: A Legacy at Sennyu-ji Temple in Kyoto

Shunzan Kiln was founded in 1917 at the foot of Sennyu-ji Temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto.

Inheriting the tradition of Kiyomizu-ware, the kiln continues to create vessels that highlight the beauty of their painting and decoration, using seasonal flowers and classical designs as motifs.

Each matcha bowl, finished by hand, possesses the delicate elegance characteristic of Kyoto pottery, allowing various expressions to be enjoyed depending on the viewing angle.

Rich Expressions Born from Layered Craftsmanship

The appeal of Shunzan Kiln lies in the rich expressions achieved through the harmony of the vessel's form, painting, glaze, and decoration.

Beginning with delicate hand-painted designs, and for some pieces, employing techniques like gold leaf, luster glazes, and slip-trailing, each matcha bowl is completed through multiple layers of handiwork.

While elegant, the pieces are not overly adorned, retaining the soft textures of the clay and glaze, which speaks to the refined quality characteristic of Shunzan Kiln.

Matcha Bowls to Admire and Enjoy Using

What Shunzan Kiln values most is creating "vessels that are a joy to behold and a pleasure to use."

The meticulously finished decorations offer a delight to admire, and when held, the warmth of the matcha bowl can be distinctly felt.

These works are meant to be kept and cherished for a long time, not only as tea bowls to enjoy a seasonal cup of tea but also as a means to experience Kyoto craftsmanship up close.
