Shunzan Kiln: Inheriting Tradition at Sennyu-ji Temple, Kyoto

Shunzan Kiln was founded in 1917 at the foot of Sennyu-ji Temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto.

Inheriting the tradition of Kiyomizu-yaki ware, the kiln continues to create vessels that highlight the beauty of their painting and decoration, using seasonal flowers and traditional patterns as their themes.

Each handmade matcha bowl possesses the delicate elegance characteristic of Kyoto pottery, allowing you to enjoy a variety of expressions depending on the viewing angle.

Rich expressions born from layered craftsmanship

The charm of Shunzan Kiln lies in the rich expression created by the harmony of the vessel's form, painting, glaze, and decoration.

From delicate brush-painted designs to techniques such as gold, luster, and slip trailing (ittchin) for certain pieces, each matcha bowl is finished with multiple layers of handwork.

While being ornate, they are never excessively embellished, retaining the soft texture of the clay and glaze, which reflects the refined quality characteristic of Shunzan Kiln.

Matcha bowls to admire and to use

Shunzan Kiln values creating "vessels that bring joy when admired and used."

The meticulously finished decorations offer a delight for the eyes, while holding the bowl in your hands, you can truly feel its warmth as a matcha bowl.

These pieces are not only perfect for enjoying a seasonal cup of tea, but also as a cherished item to experience Kyoto craftsmanship up close for many years to come.

Delivered in a wooden box.

This is Shunzan Kiln's "Kinshu" (Brocade Autumn) matcha bowl, depicting vibrant autumn leaves across the entire vessel.

By layering colors of red, orange, and yellow, the artwork expresses the beautiful autumn scenery where the mountains are adorned like brocade. The delicate brushstrokes within the vivid colors elegantly portray the deepening of autumn.

This is a seasonal bowl that fully allows you to enjoy the unique beauty of Japanese autumn.
